Sunset in Tajogaite Volcano
Discover La Palma’s new volcano, called Tajogaite, and its consequences. The earth opened on September 19th, 2021, creating the youngest territory on the continent. Its consequences showed two sides of the same coin.
The harsh side: the destruction of homes, workplaces, and leisure areas for many families from La Palma, who were left only with memories of the years lived in those places.
The beautiful side: witnessing what Mother Nature, the true owner of this planet, was capable of creating in just a few months, resulting in a breathtaking landscape.

- Pets: Allowed (in hot weather, it is recommended to use protective booties or creams to prevent their paws from getting burned). It is important to notify the company, as taxis generally do not allow animals; this must be taken into account so that the company van can be assigned to the group.
Tour description
- The meeting point is our office in El Paso, where a restroom is available for your use. Before we depart, we will watch a 6-minute video about the 2021 volcanic eruption, created by local photographer Saúl Santos.
- Afterward, we will travel by shared transport to the start of the hike (a 20-minute journey).
- The trail begins by passing the first historical volcano, the Tacande volcano—also known to locals as "Montaña Quemada" (Burnt Mountain).
- Our route takes you right to the edge of the cone of the new Tajogaite volcano—the closest point currently accessible—via a 7.8 km hike along a relatively easy path, allowing you to witness the raw power of this volcano.
- You will watch the sunset from designated viewpoints located directly across from the volcanic craters.
- The route involves an elevation change of 300 meters, starting with a descent toward the viewpoints, followed by an ascent.
- Finally, we will return to the meeting point.
Recommendations
- Wear comfortable clothing and appropriate footwear.
- Bring a jacket, preferably windproof, as temperatures drop significantly at sunset in this area and it is often windy.
- Water (minimum 1 liter).
- Never leave the marked trails.
