Marcos y Cordero: Between Tunnels and Ravines
Discover the hiking route with most water on the entire island of La Palma, in its lushest and greenest region, and be captivated by the dimensions of its canyons!
This trail follows the edge of a water channel that winds through spectacular canyons and a series of tunnels carved into the mountains a hundred years ago, until it reaches the island's most famous spring.
We will learn about the history of water on La Palma and the remarkable engineering works that were carried out on the island to bring this vital resource to its inhabitants, while also making it possible to generate energy and electricity from the water.
The meeting point is Aula de la Naturaleza de Las Cancelas, in San Andrés y Sauces. From there, we will take a 4x4 taxi to Casa del Monte, a house that once accommodated the workers who built the water channel and is located right at the beginning of the trail.
From there, a true adventure will begin along the edge of the canal and from tunnel to tunnel. In total, we will go through 11 tunnels, the longest of which is 400 metres long! And since water is abundant in this area, the lush laurel forest (laurisilva) will accompany us throughout the hike.
We will also cross several “dikes”, gigantic walls of volcanic rock formation, allowing us to also discover the volcanism of La Palma during the hike.
Once we have traversed the tunnels (there and back), we will begin the walk down from Casa del Monte to Las Cancelas, where we parked. It is an impressive trail with a touch of mystery.
Please note: Due to maintenance work on the trail, the route is currently an out-and-back hike and does not reach the springs. The walk follows the canal and the tunnels.
