San Andrés y Sauces
San Andrés y Sauces
Known in aboriginal times as the canton of Adeyahamen, meaning “beneath the water,” San Andrés y Sauces is located between Barlovento and Puntallana. Covering an area of almost 44 square kilometres, it is an important agricultural and commercial region, not only because of its fertile lands but also due to the abundance of water supplied by the Marcos y Cordero springs. These natural water sources provide water to the local population and irrigate the surrounding farmland, particularly the extensive banana plantations.
The waters of Marcos y Cordero once formed a spectacular waterfall upon reaching Los Tilos. Today, the waterfall is artificial, with the water following a circular route, yet it retains its unique beauty. It is in this very location that the island’s northwesterly trade winds embrace the mountains and release their moisture, creating the perfect conditions for the lush laurel forests of Los Tilos—one of the most important laurel forest reserves in the Canary Islands—as well as the Cubo de La Galga and the pine forests that extend towards the summit.
