Garafía
Garafía
Garafía is the northernmost municipality of La Palma and can almost be considered an island within an island. Its lush green landscapes and impressive ravines leave a lasting impression on all who visit this remarkable region. The municipality covers approximately 102 square kilometres, stretching from the coastline to the highest peaks of the island.
At the summit, at an altitude of 2,426 metres, stand the six telescopes that make up the Roque de Los Muchachos Astrophysical Observatory, one of the most important astronomical observatories in the world thanks to the exceptional clarity and quality of La Palma’s skies.
Extensive and rugged, Garafía is made up of 14 districts scattered across the territory, naturally separated by deep and steep ravines. Its inhabitants live alongside a remarkable concentration of Protected Natural Areas, which have helped preserve the municipality’s outstanding environmental quality.
The municipality’s dramatic cliffs historically made access to the sea extremely difficult. As a result, local people reached the coast through small natural harbours known as proís or porís, where they built wooden houses almost hanging from the cliffs themselves. You have not truly discovered La Palma until you have visited these hidden coastal settlements.
The municipal capital is Santo Domingo, a rural town rich in history, with many secrets buried beneath the cobblestones of its streets and the passage of time.
