Barlovento
Barlovento: “Where the Wind Comes From”
The former pre-Hispanic canton of Tagaragre, situated at an altitude of 548 metres above sea level, is the perfect place to lose yourself in the lush laurel forest. The chicks will keep us company if we decide to camp at the Barlovento Lagoon, from where an extensive network of forest tracks and trails provides direct access to the dense vegetation.
From Talavera Harbour, we can take a refreshing dip beside a rocky outcrop, where fishermen’s and merchants’ houses perched above the sea offer a glimpse into the living history of the municipality.
The natural pools of La Fajana will captivate us with their views of the vast open sea to the north, and if we take the Mimbreras road, we will experience the sensation of flying between ravines. From the mountains of Colorado and El Molino, we can enjoy a variety of panoramic views stretching from the highlands down to the coastline.
The trails of Barlovento tell the story of the island’s charcoal-making tradition and seasonal livestock migration. On the 12th and 13th of August, the Feast of the Virgin of the Rosary takes place, featuring the traditional Battle of Lepanto re-enactment between “Moors and Christians”.
