Description of the guided tour
The Route of the Volcanoes, in La Palma, is one of the routes that you cannot miss if you visit Isla Bonita, as it is one of the most beautiful and emblematic of the island. During the course of the Volcanoes Route, our Official Guide will inform you of the history of volcanism on the island through a landscape of lava, ash, calderas and volcanic eruptions that are intermingled with the characteristic green of the Canary Island pine as you pass through the youngest area of the island, formed by several volcanoes, which is part of the Cumbre Vieja Natural Park.
This is a hard route, so you will need to be in good physical condition to finish its 17 kilometres from El Refugio de El Pilar to Los Canarios (Fuencaliente), the southernmost municipality on the island, as well as wearing suitable footwear, sun protection, water and food for the whole journey.
After picking you up at your official stop, our transfer will go to El Refugio de El Pilar, the starting point of this route that goes into the famous GR-131 trail that goes uphill from the beginning to border the Birigoyo Peak. From this point you can see El Valle de Aridane, La Caldera de Taburiente and in the background El Roque de Los Muchachos, the highest point on the island of La Palma.
As we continue climbing up the path, among Canary Island pines, we can also see the towns of El Paso, Los Llanos de Aridane and Tazacorte. We continue climbing to reach the Hoyo Negro crater, from where we can also see, if the day is clear, the other neighbouring islands, as well as other points on the island such as S/C de La Palma or Los Cancajos. In this area, depending on the day, it is also possible to enjoy « the sea of clouds » which will make you feel like you are walking on clouds.
Hoyo Negro marks the beginning of the many craters that we will find along this magical Route of the Volcanoes on the island of La Palma. After reaching Las Deseadas, the highest point of this route, a descent begins that will not make it easy for us. The black volcanic sand will surely end up in our boots on more than one occasion as we make the descent, but you only have to look up to see that the beauty of the route is worth it.
With our guide we will continue to avoid historical eruptions until we reach the picturesque Volcán de Martín (Martín Volcano), one of the last craters we will see before reaching the end point of our guided tour. El Volcán de Martín is characteristic for having an impressive reddish cone that, from a distance, attracts a lot of attention.
Then, among the pine trees, our official guide will take you down to Los Canarios (Fuencaliente) where our transfer will be waiting for us to take you back to your point of origin.
